Relaxing and Rejuvenating at Grand Bay in Mauritius

Located in the Indian Ocean – Mauritius is a multi-ethnic and multi-lingual island country. This aspect of it comes from its colonial history, with the Portuguese explores reaching its shores in 1507. Thereafter, came the Dutch who decided to settle here; however, left it in 1710. The islet became a colony of the French, who named it Isle de France. In the year 1810, the British army took control of the region. Finally, the isle became independent in 1968 and a commonwealth nation in 1992. Over the years, this place has slowly came to limelight for its natural beauty, and rich flora and fauna. Another wonderful attraction in this region is Grand Bay, which is a popular beach destination. Located in the northern district of Rivière du Rempart, this place was called by the Dutch as De Bogt Zonder Eyndt, which means Bay Without End. Owing to its emerald waters and serene shores, this town draws tourists in large numbers all through the year. Another factor that attracts people to this region is the opportunity to indulge in water sports, such as sailing, swimming, water skiing and windsurfing. This town also serves a point from where people go for fishing excursions and boat trips to nearby isles of Serpent, Flat, Round and Gunner Quoin.

This bay is located around 25 km from the capital town of Port Louis and lies between Trou aux Biches and village of Pereybere. The driving distance between Port Louis and Grand Bay is around 30 minutes, and it takes about an hour and 30 minutes to reach this place from the airport.


Travellers who love shopping will be delighted to find markets nearby this bay that offer a large collection of craft and fashion items. Besides these, they can shop for souvenirs, jewellery and clothes. There are some shops over here that been operating for more than 50 years. The surroundings areas also feature hotels and restaurants, where people can relish sumptuous local cuisine. The nightlife at this destination is all about nightclubs and bars, where tourists and locals alike enjoy deep into the night, with parties going on till the wee hours of the morning.


The climate of this region is ideal for sightseeing and water sports all round the year. Summers remain warm here, with mild winters. People flock this area to enjoy the views of sunrise and sunset, and to relax witnessing the calm sea and indulging in swimming and sun bathing.
